Girona is a city made to be discovered on foot. Behind its colourful houses and medieval skyline lies more than two thousand years of history, and every narrow street, stone staircase and hidden courtyard has a story to tell. On this private walking tour, we will explore the historic heart of Girona at a relaxed pace, combining its most famous landmarks with fascinating stories that bring the city to life.

One of the most extraordinary chapters of Girona's history is its Jewish heritage. A Jewish community lived in the city from the end of the 9th century until the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. During this long period, the community had three synagogues and three ritual baths, or mikvahs. Today, the Jewish Quarter, known as the Call, preserves its medieval character with narrow stone streets, stairways, passageways and historic houses, making it one of the most atmospheric areas of Girona.

Girona was also the birthplace of the great medieval Jewish scholar Moshe ben Nahman, better known as Nahmanides or Ramban. For visitors interested in this remarkable part of the city's history, I highly recommend including the Museum of Jewish History in our itinerary. A guided visit to the museum with me takes approximately one hour and offers a deeper understanding of Jewish life, traditions and history in medieval Girona.

We will walk along Girona's impressive medieval fortifications and climb onto the city walls, where some of the most beautiful views of Girona await us. From the walls, on a clear day, we can look across the surrounding landscape towards the Pyrenees and the nearby towns and villages. We will also see Torre Gironella, a place closely connected with the dramatic events of 1391, when members of Girona's Jewish community sought refuge there during the anti-Jewish violence that swept through the city.

Our walk will also take us through the historic university area. We will see the University of Girona and talk about education in the city, from Girona's historical academic traditions to university life today. Along the way, we can admire Girona Cathedral, the Basilica of Sant Feliu, the Arab Baths, Sant Pere de Galligants, the Eiffel Bridge and many of the city's most beautiful hidden corners.

Girona has another, much more modern identity: it has become one of the world's great meeting places for professional cyclists. Lance Armstrong lived in Girona for several years, helping to draw international attention to the city as a cycling base. Today, more than 300 professional cyclists live and train in and around Girona, attracted by its climate, mountain roads, varied terrain and exceptional cycling routes.

Cinema lovers will discover another side of Girona. The city became one of the memorable filming locations for Game of Thrones, and we can visit several places transformed for the series. In 2026, Girona also welcomed the filming of Rapunzel and Tomb Raider, productions scheduled for release in 2028, continuing the city's growing relationship with international cinema.

The itinerary is completely flexible. You can choose which monuments you would like to enter during the tour, including Girona Cathedral, the Arab Baths, the Museum of Jewish History or other places that interest you. Entrance tickets are not included in the tour price and can normally be purchased directly at the monuments on the day of your visit.

Girona welcomes visitors, but its greatest treasures are often found beyond the obvious sights: in a medieval alley, on top of the ancient walls, behind an old stone doorway or in a story you would never discover simply by walking past. For a comfortable and enjoyable tour, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes and bringing a bottle of water.
